The final day of the Global Art Financier Program London module was a sounding finish. We started the day with a visit to the Wellcome Collection and the Wellcome Trust in the morning. We then had a lecture with Christie’s Chinese ceramics associate expert Katie Lundie on the topic of Authenticating Chinese Ceramics at SOAS. The London module ended with an in-depth discussion Q&A session with the Art & Economics expert Jeremy Eckstein on comparing the climate of Art & Finance industry between Britain and China. The AIAF and SOAS certificates of completion awarded the most distinguished students during the graduation ceremony at the SOAS Brunei Gallery.

The Wellcome Collection serves as a pathway for the Wellcome Trust. Our visit to the Wellcome Collection allows us to see how a pharmaceutical giant promotes its ideology via the art channel and to engage with the public. Wellcome Collection is a museum displaying an unusual mixture of medical artefacts and original artworks exploring 'ideas about the connections between medicine, life and art'. Established under Sir Henry Wellcome's will in 1936, Wellcome is a global charitable foundation and the world’s second largest funder for medical research. The Trust’s Endowment is currently worth £22 billion, with investments in public and private equities, hedge funds, property and cash. The Trust will spend £5 billion on charitable activities over the next five years.

The Insight Manager Roger Blake and External Liaison Manager Jonathan Best from the Wellcome Trust provided an overview of the Trust’s operation and management strategies. They also explained the Trust’s collaboration with China, with the Alibaba Group, for instance and answered questions on its global art project initiatives.

After a fruitful morning session with Wellcome, the first session in the afternoon was led by Christie’s Chinese Ceramics Associate Expert Katie Lundie. Ms. Lundie discussed the highlight sales of recent Chinese ceramics during Christie’s auctions and analyzed the steps of authenticating Chinese ceramics. Our group learned about the steps, the information, the people involved and more on authenticating a single Chinese ceramics artwork.

The London module ended with an in-depth discussion Q&A session with Art & Economics expert Jeremy Eckstein. The heated debate included matters regarding Chinese Guardian auction house becoming the largest shareholder of Sotheby’s; investment risks in contemporary art and what to collect; questions regarding art bonds and art financing; comparison of the origin of art collecting in Britain and in China; the art trade challenges and solutions in the current Chinese art market and the potentials in the Art and Finance industry in China.

Upon a visit to the Brunei Gallery at SOAS, our delegates received their certificates of completion of the Global Art Financier Program London Module. The certificates were handed out to distinguished students by Dr. Heather Elgood, MBE, the Head of Diploma in Asian Art at SOAS. Dr. Elgood is a renowned scholar in the field of cultural studies. She has recently raised the largest sum for SOAS centennial anniversary on school events and facility refurbishment. Her significant contribution to SOAS and education is undeniable and it is a pleasure for her to pass down the glory to AIAF delegates.

The London Module has been a great success and we are extremely appreciative for the support given by our collaborator SOAS, our speakers and coordination team in London. It has been a rewarding experience for the AIAF delegations and we look forward to visiting London in the second edition of the 2017-2018 Global Art Financier Program. Thanks to all!
